Many organizations with self-service BI struggle with performance issues in solutions created by business users. The reason is simple: most users were given a tool, maybe a short intro training, and told to “create a report.” But that’s not enough to ensure optimal, cost-effective, and scalable solutions.
As a result, we often see problems such as:
- Slow Power BI reports
- Overloaded capacities
- Frustrated users
- Rising costs of Microsoft Fabric Capacity
Why? Because users frequently struggle with key areas like data processing, incremental refresh, data modeling, report design, or writing efficient DAX measures.
Observability and awareness are important first steps (as we covered with Fabric Monitor and Fabric Capacity Alerts). But awareness alone is not enough. A user might know their dataset is consuming too many resources, but without guidance, they may not know how to fix it. Sometimes, attempts to fix problems—like misconfigured incremental refresh—only make things worse and impact the whole capacity.
The solution is education. But it has to be delivered in a way that’s practical, easy to digest, and fits into users’ daily work. That’s why we propose two approaches:
- Educational posts – short, concentrated “knowledge pills” shared, for example, through Teams. Focused and actionable, they help users understand the most important aspects of Microsoft Fabric.
- Workshops – for situations where a deeper dive is needed, helping groups gain hands-on understanding of key topics.
By raising the knowledge level across your organization, you empower self-service users to create solutions that are more optimal, scalable, and cost-effective.
